'Twas the night before Halloween and the Witch was disgusted by the local townies clacking about and getting ready for their 'cutesy' Halloween celebration. They only recognized this sacred + spooky night once per year, whilst she lives it 365, 24-7.

She decided to summon up her goblins and put them to work, wreaking havoc!

They set things to sour and ruin and made hauntingly horrific noises as they raced through the streets. After they dilapidated the entire village, they returned to their dark forest sanctuary. There, the Witch brewed a tremendously potent potion in her trusty black pot. The vaporous cloud, smelling of the most wonderful mischief and magick, grew larger and more powerful as it spread out over the entire town. She cackled with delight as the spell was cast!

What spell, exactly, did she cast? Well-that will remain a secret between the Witch and her goblins. But she decided then and there that she adored her "Mischief Night" almost as much as Halloween, itself.

This is the scent of that one, elder 'boss' guardian tree every proper creepy forest has....

He is what is known as a 'witness tree', or one that has grown and lived for a few centuries. In that duration, he's absorbed all of the history that had unfolded around him-both good and bad.

Each end of October, he lets out a bellowing exhale of release. He gets to let go of the all of the memories he's collected and stored from the year before as his scent memory also fills the air.

As he would have preferred not to have witnessed some of the things he has-out of respect, we'll call him "Halloween Tree". And with that respect, we thank him for the wonderfully eerie scent that encapsulates a haunting forest on Halloween night.

The old wise woman lived off the land in her little Appalachian valley for so long, that they became more than codependent-but more like one in the same. They are Earthy, Rugged, Folk Medicinally- Spicy and at times, Chilly and Non-Forgiving.

Wide-eyed, passerby 'ousiders' scramble quickly and quietly past her path, holding in their breath and sound. Only when they reach their own doorsteps do they feel safe enough to whisper. With great trepidation, they warn their kin about the spooky little hollow they had seen....

But, the nearest town folk are already in the know about her place. They are sure to tread lightly and to approach with respect and caution if and when they must pass through or even near "Crone Holler".

Before we had plastic buckets and high-fructose candy confections, Trick or Treat and Halloween as we know it in America, Europeans celebrated 'Allhallowtide' during the Middle Ages.

This was a 3-day event that spanned from All Hallows' Eve (10/31) into All Saints' Day (11/1) and finished up on All Souls' Day (11/2).

It was a Christian means of giving alms-or donations-of dense, biscuit-like cakes to the needy and less fortunate. Children and peasants would practice 'Souling' and go door to door, collecting these cakes in exchange for songs + prayers for the household's deceased loved ones. The prayers would ensure that any souls still potentially in purgatory would find their way safely to Heaven.

People would make these baked donations out of simple ingredients and/or whatever they had on hand in the pantry....flour, spices, dried fruits and very minimal sugar-as it was an expensive and rare 'luxury' commodity. These were known as "Soul Cakes".

It was this Christian tradition mixed with a plethora of pagan customs celebrating Samhain that our ancestors brought over from the old country that evolved into the Halloween we know and love today.

Apologies to lovers of only the sweet gourmand scents, because this is a more natural spin on a classic scent combination. This has the warm, almost savory-esque note of fresh pumpkin mixed with a 'cooler' note of naturally-sweet, ripe blueberries. And of course-we've added some additional, darker notes to bring more Fall in to spook up the vibe!

If you generally enjoy pumpkin blueberry scents but sometimes get turned off by how sweet and cloying they can be, give ours a try!

A giant effigy constructed of various wooden twigs and reeds, stuffed with straw and other field debris, then set ablaze on a hilltop in gratitude for an abundant harvest. The hard work is over, and it's time to gather around a celebratory fire!

The ancient druidic Celts did this during their seasonal festivals. They referred to this fiery behemoth as a 'Straw Man'  a.k.a. the "Wicker Man".
