Persephone started off as a nubile Goddess of Spring, fertility and abundance. Hades watched her for some time, and grew infatuated with her youthful beauty. He enticed her with a tainted pomegranate, kidnapped her and hid her below the earth within his realm.  Long story short-a deal was struck by which Persephone could return topside for half the year, but the other six months would be spent with him.

This was an early mythos created by and given to humans to explain the changing of the seasons.  We experience Fall & Winter when Persephone is with Hades, and Spring & Summer when she is free.  Persephone became known as a goddess of duality because of her imposed, cyclical lifestyle. She is light AND dark. She brings life and renewal, but also death and destruction. She infinitely carries within her the "SEED of the UnderWorld".
